Baby Robin's

We had a few Robin's nest in our yard. This particular one was in the machinery shed, less than 4' off of the ground. Amazingly, they all survived and were not found by any predators. I took pictures of them every day, with the momma watching me very closely. Sometimes, she tried to dive bomb me as I was leaving the area.

Birth Day!!

Proud momma, a little bit mad at me.
Baby's first day on the ground!
Look how serious he/she is! I love this picture!

Updates

I have not posted in a while, but did not realize that it has been this long. We've been so busy with work and our yard, that personal computer time is not very common. Here are some pictures of what we've been up to lately. Hope you enjoy!
This is a bench that my father in law (Charlie) built for us around one of my favorite trees. It turned out so much better than what I had asked for! He's an awesome builder and an even better Father in Law! I think he'd have a little more free time if I did not come up with so many projects! :-)
Here are Mike & Jimmy using Charlie's front end loader to fill up the compost bins that they built this weekend. Each one is 8'x8'x2'. We'll have them both filled within the next week. We had piles of yard waste all over and are in the process of moving it to the bins. Can't wait till we have awesome soil next year for our raised beds!
The Black Star chicken coop & yard. It's hard to believe that they are a year old already! On Saturday, they played tug of war with a frog that made a wrong turn. Gross!! We've been giving them plenty of green every day and they look forward to treat time.

Remove Formatting from selection We have found out that Jimmy's chicks were (4) males and (1) female. They are now 12 weeks old. The boys have been fighting a lot, and making our little girl want to fly away from home. Mike had to put a cover over the top of their pen because she was flying out so many times per day! We thought a 5' high fence would be enough, but we were wrong. Here are some of our favorite pictures of them from around the yard.
In the coop at night time.
All the guys hanging out in their chicken yard.
Their coop and yard.
The lonely little girl (before we put the top on the pen).
Father Chicken! (Haha - that's a payback for calling me Mother Goose!!)

Chicks - Day #3

I am posting this video because it cracks Jimmy up each time he sees it. Now, he can go on the computer at anyone's house and see it. Pretty cool!

More Baby Chick Pictures

I think having the chicks in the house - and in the office - is both a good & a bad idea. Good, because we can watch them and make sure that they are warm enough and have enough food & water. Bad, because they are very distracting to me! The cats were locked in the basement most of the afternoon and now that they are out, they can't get enough of the chicks! They will be locked out of the office tonight and hopefully the chicks will be able to rest peacefully.
I will be adding more pictures often, I really regret not taking more pictures when our other chicks were little, so be sure to check back often!

Blue Pike Farm Update 03/30/09

A message from Blue Pike Farm...

Have you ever wondered how to transplant onions or other vegetables in your garden? Well Bunky now is your chance to learn from the bros.

That's right, the bros here at Blue Pike Farm are offering FREE transplant opportunities for a select few special folk just like you. This Saturday (4/04/09 ) and the 2 Saturdays following we will have shipments of onions that need to get in the ground A.S.A.P. This FREE workshop is open to all life long learners who might enjoy getting some dirt under their fingernails.

We'll start at the crack of noon and work until we get all 1,200 or so onions in the ground. This is a great family activity too. CSA members may want to help out too!

Bring your work gloves, a great attitude and a camera. You'll definitely want photo documentation of this special event.

Saturday's forecast: Becoming mostly sunny. Highs in the upper 50s. It doesn't get much better than that.

Jimmy's Baby Chicks

He's so proud of his little chicks!

Edsel & the chicks

We picked up Jimmy's five chicks today and they sure are cute! They were hatched this morning. They are currently living in the house, in my office. They seem to be doing very well and are a lot of fun! Their little chirping is so sweet, let's just hope that they do not keep it up all night!
